A Cultural Heritage – Saree

Saree: A symbol of cultural heritage and profound language of Universe

It is believed fashion is ephemeral. But that’s not the truth regarding Saree. Sarees are amongst one of the ancient attires which never went out of trend. Although with time the draping style and length modified according to the fashion of its times. The nine-yard elegant drape is still carried with pride and elegance by the Indian ladies. The mention of sarees can be found in the ancient scriptures and Hindu epics.

History of Saree

Initially, a saree-like drape was weaved for deities and women. In India, the traces of saree can be traced back to the days of the Indus Valley civilization in the Northwestern part of India. But the First mention of saree is found in the Rig Veda, a significant ancient Hindu canonical Hindu text, which times around 3000 BC. Saree is not only popular in India but is worn with equal charm in nearby countries like
Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan.

Spiritual Significance of Saree

India is a colorful land full of diversity and equanimity. Each heart is filled with Devotion and love for the Divine. Every section and class wishes to contribute to the offerings of poojas of their beloved Deities. From Royal and elite lineage to an Underprivileged class, from an old man to a small child, everyone wishes to contribute something to their beloved Divine as a mark of their Devotion. Deities are draped in magnificent and spectacular Sarees, which are often made from expensive Silk and are weaved by the weaver with utmost love and devotion.

Nature-Inspired Motifs and Pattern

According to Indian Ideology, Nature is the mother of all lives existing on planet Earth. It is the source of all beauty and vibrancy. In old times people used to take inspiration from Nature. These sarees had pious and intricate motifs of Flora significantly lotuses and Fauna which includes the patterns of birds like Peacocks, Swan, and Eagle and animals like Elephants and Lions, etc. All these symbols have a spiritual meaning (stay tuned for our forthcoming detailed blog about the significance of motifs). Other than this, the Geometrical motifs were also considered to be auspicious as it is believed that’s the Universal language of the Divine.

The Hues

The vibrancy of the attire comes because of colors. Sarees were dyed and provided meaning with the help of hues. These hues have significant and profound meanings. The light colors express the soft and subtle messages and the brighter ones express the roaring and powerful messages of the Universe. For example, White expresses purity, delicacy, and innocence.

Pink is the color associated with Feminism ,Romanticism, optimism, and kindness.

Blue is associated with Honesty, trustworthiness, Loyalty, and Security.

Purple is considered to be highly spiritual. It is associated with the traits of creativity, bravery, and uniqueness. The traits of Yellow are Optimism, communicativeness, joy, and enthusiasm.

Red is associated with Determination Action, Strength, and Confidence. Green is associated with Harmony,
Growth, Freshness, and Fertility.

The colors of Zari i.e. Silver and Gold also signify the messages. Silver is associated with Grace, Glamour, Elegance, and Modernity.

Gold Signify Luxury, Divinity, Wisdom, and Magic.

Bronze color symbolizes strength, support, and stability.
