Pichwai paintings are a traditional artwork from Nathdwara in Rajasthan. Lord Shrinathji, a child Krishna, is associated with these paintings. The fabric that was formerly positioned behind the god in temples is referred to as "pichwai." Depending on the season, the celebration, or the narrative being presented, these would vary throughout the year. The process of creating Pichwai paintings hasn't altered all that much. Artists still use fabric, start with a drawing, and gradually add layers to the painting. The effort demonstrates that it takes time. Materials & Methods of Creation
Each Pichwai Painting is made on cloth stretched tight over a flat surface to create an even painting surface. The painter first lightly sketches the composition and then builds up the colour gradually in layers with the use of natural dyes.There are huge amounts of detail added to each painting that require careful effort from each artist. Face and clothing details are painstakingly painted which can take a long time to complete. Also, some artists will add a small amount of gold to certain parts of the painting to highlight them.Large paintings which may contain many figures, cows and buildings may take weeks or even months to complete. Because everything is done slowly by hand, each Pichwai Painting appears rich and full of life.
